Keep Your Child’s Locks Looking Luscious All Summer Long

Summer is the perfect time for kids to enjoy all the outdoors has to offer. From playing in the backyard and going on bike rides, to swimming in the pool and taking part in fun activities at Sweet & Sassy, there's no shortage of things that can help keep young minds occupied during summer vacation.

Whether it’s a makeover party or a day of pampering with one of our spa packages, we offer something special for everyone - allowing kids to let their imaginations run wild while they get ready for new adventures!

While summer is an awesome time for kids, it also comes with risks to their hair health. From exposure to UV rays from the sun to chlorine from swimming pools, certain activities can wreak havoc on your child’s locks. These harsh rays and chemicals can damage your child’s hair in multiple ways, such as fading color and weakening strands.

To ensure that their hair looks its best all summer long, here are ten tips from Sweet & Sassy on how you can protect and maintain your kid’s tresses while they enjoy the season to the fullest!

1. Use a Leave-In Conditioner

Before your kid goes out in the sun, apply a leave-in conditioner to help protect their hair from UV rays and other damaging elements. It’s an essential tool for protecting kids’ hair during the summertime. Leave-in conditioner helps to maintain moisture, prevent split ends, and soften and detangle hair.

The protective layer of the conditioner acts as a shield, blocking UV rays that can cause dryness, fading color, and even sunburns on the scalp. Leave-in conditioner is also great for helping to reduce chlorine damage from swimming pools.

2. Protect Hair from Chlorine

Chlorine is one of the most damaging elements for children’s hair during summertime and can lead to dryness, fading color, and even sunburn on the scalp. When swimming, have your child wear a swim cap or braid their hair to minimize their hair's overall chlorine exposure and physically protect it from the chemicals.

3. Choose Gentle Shampoo & Conditioners

Choosing the right shampoo and conditioner for kids is key to keeping their hair healthy during summertime. As parents, it's important to be aware of the harsh ingredients that can be found in some shampoos and conditioners.

Sulfates are a common ingredient in many products, but they can strip away natural oils from the scalp and cause dryness, fading color, and even sunburns on your child’s delicate skin. Avoid shampoos with harsh sulfates and opt for milder products designed specifically for kids' hair care needs.

4. Rinse Out Pool Water Immediately After Swimming

To ensure their hair stays healthy and strong all summer long, make sure you rinse out any leftover chlorinated water from your child's hair as soon as possible after swimming! Doing so will help remove the chlorine from their hair and minimize the potential damage that it can cause by soaking for too long.

5. Detangle Hair After Swimming

To avoid breakage and splitting of strands, gently detangle wet hair after swimming with a wide-tooth comb or brush before brushing dry. Start at the ends and work up towards the roots gradually. Detangling wet hair helps remove chlorine and other chemicals that can cause dryness, fading color, and even sunburns on the scalp. It also helps reduce breakage and split ends due to activities like running around or playing in the yard.

6. Deep Condition Regularly

Regular deep conditioning is an essential part of keeping kids' hair healthy and looking great. Apply deep conditioning masks to keep hair hydrated during the summer months when more moisture is lost due to extended time spent outdoors or in chlorine pools/hot tubs.

Not only does it help to keep moisture in the hair, but conditioning also helps protect against damaging elements such as UV rays and chlorine from swimming pools. Deep conditioning masks are a great way to lock in hydration and keep your kid's locks soft, shiny, and free of split ends.

7. Limit Heat Styling

Heat styling is a great way to style your kid’s hair and create fun looks, but it can also be damaging if not done properly. Using high temperatures or direct contact with hot tools can cause severe damage to fragile strands, leading to dryness, fading color, split ends and even sunburn on the scalp.

It's important for parents to use caution when styling their kids' hair in order to keep it healthy and looking its best all summer long. At Sweet & Sassy we recommend using low heat settings where possible and avoiding direct contact with hot tools whenever possible.

8. Eat a Balanced Diet & Drink Plenty of Water

Eating healthy and staying hydrated will ensure your child’s hair stays strong and healthy all summer long! A well-balanced diet will provide essential nutrients for strong strands and a vibrant shine. Staying hydrated with lots of water also plays an important role in keeping your kid's locks looking luscious throughout the summer.

9. Invest in UV Hair Protection Products

UV hair protection products are an extremely useful tool for keeping kids' hair healthy during summertime. Look for products specifically designed to offer UV protection from the sun’s rays during those fun-filled days outside.

These specially formulated products offer a protective layer that shields the hair from harsh UV rays, chlorine, and other damaging elements. From leave-in conditioners to specialized shampoos and conditioners, there are plenty of options available to help keep your child’s locks looking luscious all summer long.
